The “majlis” – guest salon entertainment, is it that part of the house where males gather together and the other family members being away from the sight of the guests, in other words the male guests are impossible to see the family of the house ( so will not invaded woman privacy regarding hijab rulings )
“Majaalis” are the main head of a household, just as the “dinning room” is it in western societies and for this reason most of the owners pay much attention to it. It is “the heart” of the house where guests are welcomed in the house and should be given a highly attention to it when it’s all about expanses.
There are several kind of usages of the “majlaalis” as for : “majlis” for men " majlis ar riyal ", “majlis” for women named “saala” ( or majlis an nisaa), “majlis” for the family members and “majlis” for the guests. Note that “majaalis” are used also for special events, like Eid, parties…etc
In the middle of it or next to the seats, there will always be a table to serve coffes, teas, juices, sweets, dates, fruits…etc whatever.
Is it the custom to serve “qahwa” and “shay”. There are many ways of decorated majlis like : modern style, classic style, traditional, badwu style ( for the tents ), luxury style, western mix up style, formal style, …etc don’t expect to see all the majlaalis in the same way !
In the traditional "majlis" style u will always find “dowshek” ( the Arabic sofa seats ).The formal "majlis" is the one where people meet Royal family members disscuss business. The informal "majlis" is the one where visitors will arrive and may find the television on, soft drinks, newspapers, dishes to serve around, and a very relaxed air.
